Patna: The Bihar government has directed officials to establish electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at petrol pumps, roadside eateries and restaurants across the state, signalling a renewed push to promote electric mobility.
The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary during a review meeting in Patna with the Chief Secretary, Pratyay Amrit, and senior officials from the transport department. Choudhary said expanding charging infrastructure was essential to meet future transport needs while also addressing environmental concerns.
He instructed officials to significantly increase the number of charging stations to make electric vehicles more accessible and convenient for users. According to the Deputy Chief Minister, locating chargers at fuel stations and popular stopping points such as dhabas and restaurants would help normalise the use of electric vehicles and reduce “range anxiety” among drivers.
Choudhary said the initiative would not only promote cleaner transport but also encourage private investment in the sector. He added that the installation and operation of charging stations could generate employment at the local level.
Highlighting the economic and environmental benefits of electric vehicles, Choudhary said EVs were more cost-effective than petrol and diesel vehicles and required lower maintenance. He noted that wider adoption of electric vehicles would help reduce air pollution and carbon emissions, contributing to efforts to combat climate change.
State officials said further details on implementation and timelines would be finalised following consultations with relevant departments and private stakeholders.
