Patna: A resident of Basantpurpatti village under the Saraiya police station area has fallen prey to a cyber fraud after clicking on a suspicious link sent to his mobile phone. The victim, Sujit Kumar, received a message claiming that a traffic challan had been issued in his name. Trusting the message to be genuine, he clicked on the link provided, unaware that it contained a harmful APK file designed to hack his phone.
Soon after clicking the link, Sujit Kumar’s mobile phone stopped working. Investigators believe the APK file allowed cybercriminals to gain control of his device and access sensitive information stored on it. Using this access, the fraudsters allegedly entered his Flipkart account and obtained details of multiple credit cards linked to his phone, without his knowledge.
The criminals then made several online purchases in quick succession. Two transactions worth Rs 1,36,248 and Rs 70,298 were made using one credit card. Another purchase of Rs 30,386 was carried out using a second card. A further transaction of Rs 70,298 was attempted using a third credit card, but this amount was later refunded after the order was cancelled. In total, the victim suffered a financial loss of around Rs 2.37 lakh.
After discovering the fraud, Sujit Kumar filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the cyber police station. Police officials said the case is under investigation and efforts are being made to trace the fraudsters through transaction details and digital evidence. Authorities have once again warned the public to avoid clicking on unknown links or downloading APK files sent through messages, as such scams are increasingly being used to target unsuspecting people.
