Patna: Magadh Mahila College in Patna is set to increase its hostel capacity from the next academic session after receiving infrastructure support from the Bihar government, allowing accommodation for an additional 35 students.
The college has been allotted 100 beds along with mattresses, tables, chairs, cupboards, and a water cooler by the state government. The resources will be distributed across the institution’s three functional hostels — Mahima, Vaidehi, and Welfare — officials said.
Of the additional seats, 20 will be created in Vaidehi Hostel, 10 in Mahima Hostel, and five in Welfare Hostel. College authorities said the new beds would replace damaged furniture and also be installed in rooms that were previously unusable due to a lack of basic facilities.
The principal of Magadh Mahila College, Professor Nagendra Verma, said the shortage of beds and furniture had limited hostel occupancy in recent years. “We had written to the education department earlier, highlighting the lack of facilities. With the government’s support, we expect students to occupy hostels at full capacity,” he said.
At present, Vaidehi Hostel has a sanctioned capacity of 100 seats, of which 80 are occupied. Mahima Hostel houses around 500 students against a capacity of 509, while Welfare Hostel has 35 residents out of 40 available seats.
The college hostels provide amenities including free Wi-Fi, a mess facility, common rooms, and a gym. Admission to hostels is based on merit lists and applications, with hostel fees charged separately from academic fees.
