Sitamarhi : Around two dozen sleeper buses run every day from Sitamarhi, providing direct road connectivity to Patna and several major cities across the country. Key destinations include Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Ranchi and Siliguri, reflecting the district’s growing role as a regional transport hub. The buses operate on long-distance routes ranging from about 650km to nearly 1,500km. Fares for sleeper berths are typically Rs100 to Rs200 higher than regular seating, a difference passengers are willing to pay for overnight comfort on extended journeys. To maintain safety on these long routes, most buses deploy two drivers along with a conductor. The arrangement is intended to reduce driver fatigue and ensure that traffic rules and operating standards are followed throughout the journey. Passenger amenities vary by operator but often include sleeper berths, standard seating and air-conditioning. Some buses are also fitted with urinal facilities, while fire extinguishers are mandatory to address emergency situations. The Transport Department conducts regular checks on permits and vehicle documentation. Motor Vehicle Inspector Rajesh Kumar Rai said penalties are imposed when buses are found operating without valid permits or with safety shortcomings, a measure aimed at improving compliance and protecting passengers.
