Patna: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) has taken over the investigation into the alleged rape and death of a NEET aspirant at Shambhu Girls’ Hostel in Patna, marking a significant escalation in one of the city’s most disturbing recent cases. Authorities said the move aims to ensure a thorough, transparent and impartial probe amid mounting public outrage.
In an immediate administrative response, the Senior Superintendent of Police suspended two officers — Chitragupt Nagar Station House Officer Roshni Kumari and Kadamkuan sub-inspector Hemant Jha — citing lapses in handling the case. Officials described the action as necessary to maintain accountability and restore confidence in the investigation.
The development follows a forensic science laboratory (FSL) report submitted to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which confirmed the presence of sperm on the victim’s clothing. The findings, investigators said, provide clear evidence of sexual assault and have intensified the seriousness of the inquiry. In recent days, the SIT had visited the victim’s family in Jehanabad multiple times, questioning relatives, acquaintances and other individuals for several hours in an effort to reconstruct the sequence of events.
With the CID’s entry into the case, a team led by FSL director Bipin Choudhary has begun a detailed on-site examination of the hostel premises. Officers are inspecting sealed rooms and potential crime scenes while analysing CCTV footage, fingerprints, door handles, hair samples and other physical evidence. Forensic experts are working alongside investigators to ensure that all materials are scientifically collected and preserved.
The state administration has also signalled possible action against the hostel’s management and staff, acknowledging concerns about student safety and supervision. Officials have assured the victim’s family that those responsible will be identified and prosecuted. The joint investigation by the CID and SIT is expected to continue in the coming days, even as calls grow louder for stricter safety measures and stronger oversight of private hostels across the state.
