Patna: A sharp chill has returned to Bihar during the early mornings and evenings, with dense fog reducing visibility to near zero in several districts, including Madhepura, Supaul and Madhubani. Westerly winds are intensifying the cold, making conditions feel harsher despite sunshine during the day.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), parts of Bihar may receive light rainfall on February 15. The showers could lead to a slight dip in temperatures and bring back stronger morning and evening cold.
Over the past 24 hours, Kishanganj recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state at 8.8°C, while Buxar and Nalanda followed closely at 8.9°C. Dense fog in several districts has severely affected visibility, forcing motorists to drive with headlights on even during morning hours.
February Weather More Stable Than Previous Years
Meteorologists note that February 2026 has remained more stable and drier compared to recent years. At this time in 2025, Bihar experienced cloud cover and light rainfall, which kept temperatures fluctuating. This year, reduced western disturbance activity has resulted in fewer rain spells and more consistent weather patterns.
District-wise Weather Updates
In Begusarai and Jehanabad, cold winds continue to make the weather feel chilly even after the sun comes out. Madhepura and Madhubani witnessed dense fog in the early hours, with zero visibility in some areas. Residents had to switch on vehicle lights to move safely.
Patna is also experiencing cool mornings and evenings, though daytime temperatures are rising with strong sunshine. The capital may see light fog in the morning, followed by clear skies through the day.
Signs of Gradual Temperature Rise
IMD forecasts suggest that minimum temperatures could increase by 2–3°C in the coming days, indicating that the impact of severe winter is slowly weakening. However, foggy mornings may continue due to calm winds and falling night temperatures.
Why Bihar’s Weather Pattern Has Changed
Weather experts attribute the shift mainly to reduced activity of western disturbances, which are currently limited to the western Himalayan region. By the time they reach eastern India, their impact weakens significantly.
Additionally, lower wind speeds and limited moisture in the atmosphere have restricted cloud formation and rainfall. Calm nights are promoting fog formation, but strong daytime sunlight is clearing it quickly.
The jet stream has also remained concentrated over the western Himalayas, keeping most weather activity away from the plains. As a result, Bihar is seeing sunny days paired with chilly mornings and evenings.
Outlook for Patna
Patna is expected to remain mostly clear during the day with good sunshine. Light fog may appear in the morning, while evenings will stay mildly cold. Overall temperatures are likely to remain close to normal for mid-February.
