Patna: A major discussion has started in the Bhojpuri film industry after actor and singer Akshara Singh publicly supported Pawan Singh’s wife Jyoti Singh in her demand for alimony. Akshara said that a woman has the right to receive financial support after marriage and that even Rs 100 crore would not be enough for what Jyoti has gone through. Her statement has gone viral and has sparked a wider debate on women’s rights, marriage responsibilities, and financial security after separation.
The divorce case between Pawan Singh and Jyoti Singh is currently being heard in the family court in Ara. On February 11, Jyoti appeared in court and asked for Rs 10 crore as maintenance. She told the judge that she had been married for seven years but never received proper support or maintenance from her husband. She also said that she attended every court hearing herself, while Pawan Singh often failed to appear. Speaking emotionally, she said she still wanted reconciliation, but if that was not possible, she deserved financial security.
Akshara Singh spoke to the media and said that marriage comes with responsibility. According to her, if a man brings a woman into his life as his wife, he must also take care of her. She said that alimony is not a favour, but a right. Her words were widely shared on social media, with many people supporting her stand and others debating the issue of high maintenance demands in celebrity cases.
Pawan Singh did not appear in court on the day of the hearing. His lawyer said that he was unwell and had been admitted to a hospital due to high blood pressure. He was shown on a video call from a hospital bed, but the name of the hospital was not clearly stated. This raised questions from Jyoti’s legal team. Her lawyer also said that she has not received regular maintenance for the last four to five years and that an application for interim support is still pending.
The judge said that the court would first look at the possibility of reconciliation between the couple before deciding on maintenance and other financial matters. The case has now been postponed, and the next hearing is scheduled for February 24. Until then, the issue continues to attract public attention, as it highlights the challenges faced by women seeking financial security after a troubled marriage.
