Patna: Former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amitabh Das is once again in the spotlight after making sensational claims on social media in connection with the alleged rape and death of a NEET aspirant. Patna Police recently conducted a raid at his residence and registered a case against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and six other sections of law.

Das, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre, had built a reputation as a tough officer during the early years of his career. However, his service record later became marred by controversies, departmental proceedings and legal disputes, eventually leading to his premature retirement from service.

Background and Education

Amitabh Das hails from Madhubani district in Bihar. He currently resides in Sky Z Apartment in New Pataliputra Colony, Patna, where police teams from three police stations carried out the recent search operation.

His father served as an Additional District Magistrate (ADM) in Bihar. Das completed his early education in Laheriasarai, Darbhanga, and passed his matriculation examination in 1984 as a district topper. He later joined Patna Science College with biology as his subject and stayed at Newton Hostel before moving to Cavendish Hostel in his second year. He completed his graduation from Darbhanga and prepared for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination from there, qualifying for the IPS in 1994. His siblings currently reside in the United States.

Career and Departmental Action

Das joined the IPS on September 4, 1994, in the Bihar cadre. His first posting as Superintendent of Police (SP) came in 1997 in Deoghar. He later served in Lakhisarai, Kishanganj, Arwal and as Rail SP in Patna.

Around 19 years ago, while serving as Commandant of BMP-11 in Jamui, he faced allegations including indiscipline. Departmental proceedings were initiated against him on August 28, 2007. He reportedly did not receive promotion for nearly a decade, and the matter reached the Supreme Court. Although he later sought promotion after getting relief from the court, many of his batchmates had risen to the rank of Inspector General (IG), while he remained at the SP level.

In 2006, a woman accused him of sexual exploitation, alleging that he had maintained a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage while he was posted in Jamui.

Removal from Service

Following allegations of sexual misconduct, indiscipline and a series of controversial public statements against senior political leaders, Das remained in the news for extended periods. After Nitish Kumar became Chief Minister, Das remained under suspension for a long time. Subsequent legal proceedings addressed issues related to his suspension and promotion.

Later, the Bihar government recommended his removal from service to the central government. After receiving approval from the Union Home Ministry, he was compulsorily retired in August 2018. At the time, he was posted as Superintendent of Police-cum-Assistant Civil Defence Commissioner.

In August 2019, after alleging that then MLA Anant Singh could arrange a contract killing against him in connection with the AK-47 seizure case, Das was provided security.

Political and Public Interventions After Retirement

After losing his IPS position, Das floated a political outfit named Krantikari Nyay Party. Through social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, he continued to level allegations against the Bihar government, police officials and ministers.

In February 2022, he claimed that girls from a women’s remand home in Patna City were being supplied to four state ministers and demanded a CBI probe in a letter addressed to the Governor of Bihar.

In August 2019, he wrote to the Director General of Police seeking protection, alleging that Anant Singh could get him killed. He claimed to have previously reported in 2009 that illegal arms, including an AK-47 rifle, were stored at Singh’s residence.

In May 2023, following the release of former MP Anand Mohan from prison, Das alleged that Mohan had issued a contract to eliminate him. He also opposed Mohan’s release in court and supported the family of former Gopalganj District Magistrate G. Krishnaiah.

In February 2021, he wrote to the DGP alleging that advanced weapons such as AK-47, AK-56 and SLR rifles were hidden at properties linked to Minister Lesi Singh. He urged immediate raids based on what he described as credible information.

Current Case

The latest controversy stems from Das’s social media posts regarding the alleged rape and death of a NEET aspirant. Following his online claims, Patna Police registered a case against him under the POCSO Act and other relevant legal provisions and conducted a search at his Patna residence.

Police have not yet disclosed detailed findings of the raid. No official statement has been issued regarding further action. The investigation is ongoing.
