Patna: Preparations are under way for what officials describe as a major upgrade to public transport infrastructure in Patna, with approval granted for 50 modern “green bus stops” across 14 major routes in the city.
The proposed shelters aim to address long-standing complaints from commuters who often wait for buses in harsh weather conditions with little reliable information about arrival times.
Under the plan, the new bus stops will be equipped with digital display boards providing real-time information on routes, arrivals and departures, similar to systems used at railway stations. An automated announcement system will also alert passengers about incoming buses, reducing uncertainty and long waiting periods.
The facilities are expected to include QR code-based ticketing, allowing commuters to purchase tickets independently. CCTV cameras will be installed for security, and drinking water facilities will be provided. Officials say electricity supply to the shelters will rely on solar panels, positioning the project as both commuter-friendly and environmentally sustainable.
The first phase will focus on Patna. In subsequent phases, the government plans to expand the model to other major cities, with a target of 500 green bus stops across the state. Surveys are currently being conducted to determine final locations based on passenger flow and route demand.
The move comes after earlier bus shelters built under the Smart City project fell into disrepair. Many of those facilities now have non-functional display boards, broken sheds and faulty lighting, while some have reportedly been encroached upon.
Officials say the new initiative places equal emphasis on long-term maintenance and monitoring, arguing that technological integration and structured management will prevent a repeat of past failures.
