Samastipur: A proud moment unfolded in Samastipur when a middle school student brought recognition to the district by winning praise at a state-level Project Based Learning (PBL) fair. Shabnam Kumari, a student of the Upgraded Middle School in Dumra Toll under Hasanpur block, was honoured for presenting an innovative mathematics model. Her achievement has been celebrated by teachers and district officials as a sign that government schools in rural areas are steadily improving in quality and confidence.
Shabnam’s project was based on the famous Pythagoras theorem, first introduced by the ancient Greek mathematician Pythagoras. The theorem explains that in a right-angled triangle, the square of the longest side – known as the hypotenuse – is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. While the concept is often considered difficult for many students, Shabnam’s model explained it in a clear and practical way. Using simple materials and step-by-step demonstration, she showed how the mathematical rule works in real life, making it easier for others to understand.
At the state-level fair, her presentation stood out because of her confidence and clarity. She not only displayed the model but also explained the reasoning behind it and answered questions from the jury. Teachers present at the event said that her work reflected the true purpose of project-based learning, which encourages students to think independently, ask questions and find practical solutions rather than simply memorising textbook answers.
Jamaluddin, district programme officer for primary education and associated with the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, said the award was a matter of pride for the entire district. He described it as the result of teamwork among teachers, students and education officials. District teacher education coordinator Arjun Kumar, technical members Rituraj Jaiswal and Deepa, and associate teacher Sonu Kumar were credited for guiding and supporting the student throughout her preparation.
Officials believe this achievement will inspire other students in Samastipur to take part in innovative learning activities. They say it also highlights the growing importance of experiential learning in schools. For Shabnam and her district, the recognition is not just about winning a prize – it is about proving that dedication, guidance and creativity can lead to success, no matter where a student comes from.
