Patna: Businesses in India are increasingly using WhatsApp as a faster, more interactive alternative to SMS, sending order updates, payment confirmations, customer support messages, and promotional offers. While the platform has improved engagement, users have found themselves overwhelmed by unsolicited marketing messages.
WhatsApp’s policy requires businesses to message only users who have opted in, meaning prior interaction or consent is necessary. When a business contacts a user for the first time, WhatsApp offers three options: block the account entirely, report the message as spam, or continue receiving messages. This initial choice often determines whether users will face ongoing marketing communications.
For those already receiving promotional content, WhatsApp offers two main ways to regain control. Many verified business accounts provide an “Opt Out” or “Stop Promotions” option, which restricts messages to only essential updates. If the option is unavailable or the messages continue, users can block the business account to stop all further messages and calls.
The Indian government is also introducing stricter regulations to tackle digital spam. Companies that repeatedly send messages without consent may face penalties. WhatsApp has emphasized that user privacy and control are central to its platform, ensuring individuals can manage their interactions with businesses efficiently.
With these tools, users no longer have to tolerate unwanted marketing messages. Whether opting out, blocking, or reporting, the control is firmly in their hands, keeping their inboxes secure and clutter-free.
