Patna: Bihar government has stepped up security arrangements ahead of Holi, deploying police and magistrates at nearly 600 locations across the state, including 94 identified as sensitive in the capital, Patna. Officials say the aim is to ensure that celebrations pass peacefully, amid concerns over illegal liquor trade, misinformation and potential disorder.
This year, the government has adopted what it describes as a “zero tolerance” approach. The district administration has intensified patrolling and activated a dedicated social media monitoring cell to curb rumours before they spread.
Dr Tyagarajan SM, the District Magistrate of Patna, warned that anyone found storing, selling or consuming illegal liquor would face strict legal action, including imprisonment. Surveillance will include drones and CCTV cameras positioned across sensitive neighbourhoods, with instructions for real-time monitoring to allow swift intervention in case of trouble.
The statewide security push has also been reinforced by the director general of police, Vinay Kumar, who has issued directives to all districts. Authorities have deployed 12 companies of the Range Reserve Force, 31 companies of the Bihar Special Armed Police and thousands of Home Guard personnel. Patna has received the largest contingent, including three companies of armed police and more than 500 constables. Additional forces have been dispatched to districts such as Darbhanga, Gaya and Munger, while search operations are under way in border areas and residential colonies to enforce the state’s prohibition laws.
Alongside law enforcement, fire safety measures have been tightened for Holika Dahan bonfires. The administration has capped the height of bonfires at 10 feet and instructed organisers not to light them beneath electricity lines. At least 1,000 litres of water must be kept nearby, and celebrations must maintain a safe distance from petrol pumps, gas depots and agricultural fields. Parents have been advised to ensure children keep away from flames and wear cotton clothing.
Hospitals have been placed on alert with special medical teams on standby. Residents facing emergencies related to fire, electricity or public safety can contact the district control room or dial the 112 emergency helpline. Officials say the message is simple: celebrate with enthusiasm, but within the bounds of the law and safety guidelines.
