Patna: A senior Bihar government delegation is visiting Mauritius as state guests for Bihar Diwas, holding discussions aimed at strengthening cultural, heritage and tourism ties between the two regions.
The delegation, led by Pranav Kumar, secretary of the art and culture department, and Nand Kishore, managing director of the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation, met the president of Mauritius and several senior ministers, including those handling culture, tourism and agriculture.
Focus on heritage preservation
During discussions with Mauritian authorities, both sides emphasised the importance of preserving ancient manuscripts as part of shared cultural heritage.
Officials explored the possibility of joint initiatives for conservation, digitisation and exhibition of manuscripts, including those linked to the Girmitiya era of indentured labour. A proposal was also discussed to establish a dedicated museum for preserving such historical records.

Mithila painting and cultural exchange
The delegation also focused on promoting Bihar’s traditional Mithila painting in Mauritius, where there is growing interest in the art form.
Officials discussed plans for training programmes, workshops and exhibitions to create a common platform for artists from both countries. The possibility of online classes for children and aspiring artists in Mauritius was also explored.
Secretary Pranav Kumar said Mithila painting remains a key symbol of Bihar’s cultural identity and efforts are under way to expand its global reach.

Tourism and connectivity
Separate discussions were held with Mauritius’s tourism minister and transport operators to enhance connectivity and promote greater people-to-people contact.
The delegation also extended an invitation to Mauritian representatives to visit Bihar during Bihar Diwas celebrations, signalling efforts to deepen bilateral engagement.

Officials said the visit reflects a broader push to strengthen cultural diplomacy and explore new avenues of cooperation between Bihar and Mauritius.
