Patna: The Union government is considering a proposal to expand air connectivity in Bihar by developing new airports in several districts, as part of a broader national plan under UDAN 2.0 to increase aviation infrastructure.
Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the launch and implementation of the Regional Connectivity Scheme – Modified UDAN for a period of ten years from 2026-27 to 2035-36 with a total outlay of Rs 28,840 crore. Altogether 100 airports will be developed from existing unserved airstrips to enhance regional connectivity. It will give a boost to economic growth, trade and tourism in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities and support affordable air travel for common citizens.
Officials said locations including Gopalganj, Begusarai, Bhagalpur and Chhapra in Bihar have been identified in the proposal, which is yet to receive final approval.
At present, Patna and Darbhanga handle the majority of passenger traffic in Bihar, with limited operations in Gaya and Purnia.
The plan includes the potential development of the Sabeya airfield in Gopalganj and a site in Ulao in Begusarai, along with new airport infrastructure in Bhagalpur and Chhapra.
Meanwhile, other aviation projects in the state are progressing. A civil terminal in Purnia and the redevelopment of the Patahi airstrip in Muzaffarpur are in advanced stages, officials said.
A proposal for a new greenfield airport in Sonepur, in Saran district has recently been approved by Bihar cabinet.
