Patna: Pappu Yadav has come under scrutiny after remarks on women and their participation in politics triggered controversy in Bihar.
The Bihar State Women’s Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and issued a notice to the MP, asking him to submit a response within three days.
According to reports, Pappu Yadav said that women in India are worshipped as goddesses but do not receive genuine respect in society. He also alleged that serious barriers continue to affect women’s participation in politics.
One of the remarks attributed to him — concerning women entering politics through unfair circumstances — drew particular criticism and quickly sparked debate in political and social circles.
The Women’s Commission has asked Pappu Yadav to explain the context in which the statement was made and the basis for his comments. It has also questioned whether the remarks undermined the dignity and respect of women.
Officials said that if the explanation is not found satisfactory, the Commission may consider recommending further legal or administrative action.
The issue has generated strong reactions across Bihar’s political landscape. Several leaders described the comments as inappropriate, while others argued that the statement was being taken out of context.
Women’s rights groups and social organisations strongly objected to the remarks, saying that public representatives should speak responsibly on issues concerning women’s dignity and equality.
Some organisations welcomed the Commission’s intervention, arguing that firm action is necessary to discourage insensitive comments in public life.
The controversy has now shifted attention to Pappu Yadav’s expected reply, which could determine the next course of action by the Commission.
