Patna: Authorities in Bihar have issued a red alert for three districts as a spell of severe weather is expected to sweep across the state over the coming days, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and lightning strikes.
The India Meteorological Department said conditions had already begun to deteriorate, with cloud cover, intermittent rainfall and gusty winds reported in several areas, including the state capital, Patna.
A red alert has been declared for Katihar, Kishanganj and Purnia, where the risk of intense storms and heavy rainfall is considered highest. Wind speeds in these districts could reach 50 to 60 km/h, prompting officials to urge residents to remain alert and take precautions.
Neighbouring districts including Araria, Madhepura, Saharsa and Supaul are also expected to experience adverse conditions, with forecasts warning of strong winds and frequent lightning. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from open areas during periods of heightened activity.
Meteorologists have attributed the sudden shift in weather to a combination of systems affecting the region. A cyclonic circulation over south-eastern Uttar Pradesh, coupled with a low-pressure area extending across Chhattisgarh and Odisha, is influencing conditions in Bihar. In addition, another cyclonic circulation over West Bengal and Bangladesh is contributing to the instability.
The change in weather has led to a drop in temperatures, bringing relief from recent heat. In Patna, the maximum temperature fell to 29.7C, and officials said there was currently no risk of a heatwave.
The IMD has described the next five days as critical, with intermittent rain, thunderstorms and lightning expected to persist, particularly in northern and eastern parts of the state. Authorities said they were closely monitoring the situation.
Officials have also issued safety guidance, urging people not to take shelter under trees during storms, to avoid open fields during lightning, and to remain indoors whenever possible.
