Muzaffarpur/Patna: In an effort to improve security, reduce overcrowding and curb unauthorised access to platforms, the Indian Railway authorities of the East Central zone have announced plans to install scanner-enabled barriers at major railway stations, including Muzaffarpur junction.
The system, inspired by entry mechanisms used in metro stations across India, will require passengers to scan QR-coded tickets at automated barriers before being allowed entry onto platforms. Railway officials said the tendering process for installation would begin shortly.
According to officials from the East Central Railway zone, the barriers will be installed at the main entrance points of the platforms. Reserved, unreserved and platform tickets are already being issued with QR codes, which passengers will need to scan to gain entry.
The move follows a successful trial at New Delhi railway station, where similar scanner-equipped barriers have already been tested.
Railway authorities said the initiative was aimed at strengthening passenger safety and managing increasing crowds at busy junctions. Officials also pointed to a rise in incidents of theft and snatching on platforms, arguing that controlled access could help reduce such crimes.
The new system is also expected to discourage ticketless entry, with visitors required to purchase platform tickets before entering station premises. Railway officials said this could contribute to increased revenue collection.
Muzaffarpur junction, one of state’s busiest railway hubs, is among several major stations expected to receive the new barriers as part of a wider modernisation and security upgrade programme.
