Patna: A 48-hour protest by students at the nursing college of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) came to an end on Friday after intervention by the Bihar health department and senior institute officials.
The agitation was called off following a one-hour meeting between health department representatives, the institute’s director and a delegation of students. After the talks, students returned to their hostels and resumed classes.
As part of the administrative response, Rupashree Dasgupta, deputy principal of the nursing college, has been relieved of all academic responsibilities for batches from 2021 to 2025. Officials said she would not be engaged in academic work “for the time being”, while a special committee has been set up to investigate the allegations raised by students.
The protest had centred on accusations of mental harassment, abusive behaviour and threats by the deputy principal. Students alleged they were routinely humiliated over minor issues and warned of academic penalties, including failing marks, leading to prolonged psychological stress. Several students also reported physical and mental strain during the period of unrest.

Another key issue raised during the agitation was the non-payment of student stipends pending since 2018. The health department has assured that the process to release the arrears will begin within seven working days. Students said the delay had caused financial hardship and disrupted their studies.
The institute administration has also promised steps to regularise the academic calendar, which is currently about six months behind schedule. Officials said a new action plan is being prepared to ensure timely examinations and completion of coursework.
In addition, a student-administration coordination committee will be formed to address grievances, particularly those of female students. The body will include two representatives from each academic semester.
