Patna: The Home Department Bihar has abolished the Bihar Vigilance Investigation Cadre in a significant restructuring of the state’s police administration.
Under the new arrangement, officers serving in the vigilance cadre — including Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), police inspectors and sub-inspectors — will now be absorbed into their corresponding cadres within the Bihar Police.
Government Cites Bihar Police Act
Officials said the decision had been taken in accordance with provisions of the Bihar Police Act 2007 with the aim of bringing greater uniformity to the policing system.
According to the order, DSP-rank officers from the vigilance investigation cadre will be inducted into the Bihar Police Service, with their seniority counted from the date of their initial appointment.
Police inspectors and sub-inspectors belonging to the 2014 and 2023 batches will similarly be absorbed into equivalent posts within the Bihar Police structure.
Service Continuity To Remain Protected
The government clarified that the officers’ service tenure would be treated as continuous and that the restructuring would not adversely affect their appointments, length of service or professional experience.
However, for the purpose of determining seniority, the absorbed officers will be placed immediately after the last-ranked officers of their respective batches within the Bihar Police.
Officials said that in recommendation lists issued by the Bihar Public Service Commission and the Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission, the names of these officers would be added after the final existing entry in their corresponding batches.
Government Sees Move As Structural Reform
The government said the merger was expected to improve coordination between vigilance and general policing systems while streamlining administrative processes.
Officials in the Home Department described the move as a major structural reform intended to simplify police administration and strengthen institutional efficiency within the state law enforcement apparatus.
