Patna: Construction work at the upcoming Bihta International Airport is progressing across multiple sections, though questions are increasingly being raised about delays in the construction of the terminal building — considered the most critical component of the project.
Officials said work on the apron, taxiways and boundary walls is currently underway in different phases as part of the airport’s expansion plan.
Apron And Boundary Wall Work Progressing Rapidly
Construction of the airport apron — the area where aircraft are parked and where passenger boarding, unloading and technical servicing take place — is reportedly advancing at a rapid pace.
Authorities said the apron is being designed to accommodate the future movement of larger aircraft.
As part of the project, boundary wall construction across 108 acres has already been completed, while additional work continues on another eight acres of land acquired last year.
Officials described the boundary infrastructure as crucial for maintaining airport security standards.
Taxiway Construction Requires Coordination With Air Force
Work is also progressing on the airport’s taxiways, which will connect the apron to the runway.
According to project sources, nearly half of the taxiway falls within land controlled by the Indian Air Force, requiring close coordination between the Air Force and the Department of Civil Aviation during construction.

Terminal Building Delay Raises Questions
Despite progress on other infrastructure, the construction pace of the passenger terminal building has drawn concern from local residents and project-linked sources.
They say expected progress on the terminal has not materialised over the past year, raising fears that the overall project timeline could face delays.
The expanded Bihta Airport is expected to reduce pressure on the existing Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport while significantly improving regional air connectivity and investment prospects.
April 2027 Operational Target
The Bihar government has set April 2027 as the target date for making the airport operational.
The first phase of the project includes:
- construction of the passenger terminal building
- a service block
- a fire station
- the apron infrastructure
Officials said Rs 460 crore has already been released for the first phase, while the total project cost is estimated at Rs 1,453 crore.
Once completed, the airport is expected to handle around 3,000 passengers daily, easing congestion at Patna Airport and improving air travel access across the region.
