Patna: Incidents of chain snatching are on the rise in Patna, with police now reporting the involvement of women suspects in some cases. The latest incident was reported from the Shastri Nagar area, where a woman riding pillion on a motorcycle allegedly snatched a gold chain from a pedestrian before fleeing with her accomplice.
According to police, the incident took place near the pump house in North Patel Nagar. The victim, Gautam Kumar, was walking in the area when a youth and a young woman arrived on a motorcycle near Tribhuvan Apartment. While the youth rode the bike, the woman sitting behind allegedly snatched Gautam’s gold chain and fled from the spot.
Gautam reportedly chased the accused for some distance but failed to catch them. A case has been registered at Shastri Nagar police station, and police are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify the suspects.
In another incident near GPO Golambar, an elderly woman was allegedly threatened and robbed of her gold chain by a miscreant. The victim, Rajkumari Devi, a resident of Maruti Nagar in Jakkanpur, has lodged a complaint at Kotwali police station.
Police said Rajkumari Devi was returning from Rajiv Nagar and had just stepped out of an auto-rickshaw near GPO Golambar when a man approached her. He allegedly misled her, took her aside and threatened her before snatching her gold chain and fleeing the scene.
The victim later reached the police station along with her son and filed an FIR. Police have started an investigation into the incident.
Police officials said more than six chain-snatching incidents have been reported across Patna in May alone. CCTV footage has been collected from all major crime scenes. During the investigation, police found that the accused frequently change motorcycles to avoid identification.
Investigators suspect that some criminals recently released on bail from Beur Jail may be involved in the recent chain-snatching spree. Police are currently preparing a list of such suspects and conducting verification.
