Patna: The Bihar government has placed the state on heightened alert following a Central advisory issued in response to rising Ebola virus cases reported from African countries. Officials said detailed precautionary guidelines are being prepared and are likely to be issued on May 26.
Health authorities have directed districts to strengthen surveillance systems and ensure early identification of suspected cases. The advisory emphasises preparedness rather than panic, according to officials familiar with the matter.
Surveillance at Airports and Health Facilities
As part of the preparedness measures, screening and monitoring systems are set to be reinforced at key entry points, including Patna Airport.
Officials said travellers arriving from abroad, particularly from African nations, will be subject to closer health checks. Hospitals have also been asked to remain alert for patients showing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, or unexplained bleeding.
Isolation and Treatment Arrangements
The proposed guidelines include the creation of dedicated isolation wards in government medical colleges and district hospitals to manage suspected cases if required.
Major healthcare institutions, including Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), are expected to follow enhanced infection-control protocols and readiness measures.
Training sessions are also being planned for doctors and healthcare workers on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), masks, and standard infection prevention procedures.
WHO Flags Public Health Risk
The World Health Organization has identified Ebola as a serious public health concern following recent cases reported in countries including Congo and Uganda. The organisation has urged continued global vigilance and preparedness to prevent further spread.
State health officials said the situation is being monitored closely and further instructions will be issued once the final guidelines are circulated.
