Patna: The Vigilance Investigation Bureau in Bihar has intensified its crackdown on corruption among public servants, with a structured action plan in place to catch officials allegedly accepting bribes in government offices.
According to the bureau, a target has been set to register cases against 80 corrupt public servants by the end of June as part of its first-half action plan for 2026.
Officials said that so far, 62 FIRs related to corruption have already been registered this year. Till May 25, vigilance teams had caught 55 accused red-handed while allegedly accepting bribes. More than ₹24 lakh in bribe money has also been recovered during these operations.
Possibility of New Record in Vigilance Cases
Data from the Vigilance Investigation Bureau shows that the highest number of cases registered in the first half of any year over the past 25 years was in 2009, when 74 cases were recorded. In 2007, 70 vigilance cases were registered during the same period.
The bureau is currently registering an average of 12 to 13 FIRs every month against allegedly corrupt officials. If the current pace continues, the vigilance department may set a new record by June this year.
In comparison, 46 cases were registered during the first half of 2025. Throughout 2025, the bureau registered a total of 122 FIRs, including 101 trap cases, and recovered bribe money amounting to ₹37.80 lakh.
Continuous Monitoring and Trap Operations
Vigilance teams have been continuously carrying out trap operations based on complaints of corruption received from the public. Officials said strict monitoring is being conducted from trap cases to court trials.
Jitendra Singh Gangwar, Director General of the Vigilance Investigation Bureau, said action against corrupt officials has intensified since January this year.
“Continuous monitoring is being carried out from trap cases to court trials. The general public is requested to report any demand for bribes to the Vigilance Investigation Bureau,” Gangwar said.
According to official figures, the number of FIRs registered in the first half of recent years were:
- 2020 – 13 cases
- 2021 – 25 cases
- 2022 – 31 cases
- 2023 – 24 cases
- 2024 – 5 cases
- 2025 – 46 cases
The Vigilance Investigation Bureau has appealed to citizens to report corruption-related complaints through its official channels.
