Patna: In response to the alarming rise in fatalities among two-wheeler drivers in road accidents, the Bihar government has ramped up measures to enforce helmet use more effectively. Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal announced that special campaigns will be launched across all districts to boost helmet-wearing compliance and promote road safety.
District Magistrates and District Transport Officers have been instructed to raise awareness about helmet usage through various initiatives, including public awareness programs and enforcement campaigns. These efforts aim to educate the public on the critical role helmets play in preventing severe injuries.
A special helmet-checking campaign will be conducted by the Transport and Traffic Police, during which officers will monitor two-wheeler drivers on the roads. Drivers caught without helmets will face fines, reinforcing the importance of adhering to safety regulations to prevent accidents.
Last year, a staggering 3,203 two-wheeler drivers lost their lives in road accidents across Bihar, with 2,247 sustaining serious injuries. Among those fatalities, 882 drivers and 507 riders were not wearing helmets at the time of their accidents, underscoring the necessity of helmet use in saving lives.
Transport Secretary Agarwal urged all two-wheeler drivers to prioritize their safety by consistently wearing high-quality helmets. He emphasized that many deaths could have been avoided if helmets had been used, reiterating that it is mandatory for both drivers and passengers to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers.
