Patna: The Bihar government has drawn up a plan to widen Nehru Path (Bailey Road) in Patna to maintain traffic flow during the construction of underground stations under the Patna Metro project.
A joint team of officials from the district administration, traffic police, Road Construction Department, Patna Metro and the District Transport Office (DTO) is scheduled to inspect the corridor on Saturday before the proposal is finalised.
Road Widening Proposed
Under the proposed plan, the stretch between Zoo Gate No. 1 and Income Tax Golambar will be widened by temporarily removing the boundary walls of several government buildings located on both sides of the road.
Officials said the move is intended to ensure uninterrupted traffic during the construction of three underground metro stations planned near Income Tax Golambar, Vikas Bhawan and Zoo Gate No. 1.
The underground construction is expected to continue for around two years.
Alternative Plan Dropped
Authorities had initially considered closing one side of Nehru Path and diverting traffic through residential neighbourhoods behind Rajvanshi Nagar, Hanuman Nagar and Visvesvaraya Bhawan.
However, the proposal was dropped after officials concluded that it would cause significant inconvenience to local residents and increase congestion on internal roads.
The revised road-widening proposal emerged following a high-level meeting of the Urban Development and Housing Department.

Joint Survey To Determine Extent Of Work
Officials said Saturday’s inspection will determine how far the boundary walls of individual government buildings need to be shifted to accommodate wider carriageways.
Once metro construction is completed, the boundary walls are expected to be rebuilt.
The administration is also considering temporary barricading to ensure construction work and traffic movement can continue simultaneously throughout the project.
Government Buildings Likely To Be Affected
According to officials, the proposal may affect boundary walls of several government properties, including:
- Vikas Bhawan (south side of Nehru Path)
- Officers’ Flats
- Dial 112 Building
- Bihar Radio Building
- Visvesvaraya Bhawan
- Niyojan Bhawan
- Vidyut Bhawan near Income Tax Golambar
Final Approval Pending
The proposal will be implemented only after the joint inspection team submits its recommendations and grants technical approval.
Officials said the objective is to minimise disruption for commuters while allowing work on one of the most critical underground sections of the Patna Metro project to progress on schedule.
