Patna: The Bihar government has moved a step closer to developing three new Ganga Path projects, expanding its riverfront road network beyond Patna. The Bihar State Road Development Corporation Limited (BSRDCL) has initiated the process of selecting a survey agency, marking the first stage of projects expected to improve connectivity across several districts in north and south Bihar.

According to officials, the proposed roads would benefit Patna, Saran, Bhojpur, Buxar, Siwan and Gopalganj, while also improving access for residents of Vaishali and neighbouring areas.

Survey to Determine the Final Road Plan

BSRDCL has invited bids for conducting a detailed survey of the proposed corridors, with several agencies reported to have submitted applications.

According to officials, the survey will determine the final alignment, technical feasibility, project cost and construction requirements before the government proceeds with implementation.

The study will also examine road width, land acquisition needs, environmental impact, traffic projections and the economic viability of the proposed corridors.

Three Riverfront Highways Proposed

The state government has proposed the following three riverfront road projects:

Ganga Ambika Path: Bidupur (Vaishali) to Dighwara (Saran), approximately 56 kilometres
Vishwamitra Path: Maner (Patna) to Buxar, approximately 90 kilometres
Narayani Path: Darihara (Konhua) in Saran district to Dumaria Ghat in Gopalganj district, approximately 73.51 kilometres

According to the government, these projects are intended to create a continuous road network along the banks of the Ganga and Narayani rivers, improving connectivity between north and south Bihar.

What the Survey Will Assess

Officials said the survey will focus on several technical and planning aspects before construction begins.

These include:

  • Final road alignment
  • Existing and projected traffic volume
  • Construction cost estimates
  • Land acquisition requirements
  • Environmental impact assessment
  • Requirement for bridges, flyovers and other structures
  • Economic feasibility of the projects

The findings will form the basis for preparing detailed project reports and determining the implementation strategy.

Toll Decision Yet to Be Taken

According to sources, the government may consider introducing toll collection on the proposed Ganga Paths. However, officials said no decision has been taken at this stage. The survey will evaluate traffic volume and revenue potential before any proposal for toll collection is considered.

Expected Benefits for the Region

The proposed road network is expected to improve travel between several districts by providing faster and more direct routes.

According to the government, the projects could also facilitate the movement of freight vehicles, improve access to markets and reduce travel time for passengers. Officials said better connectivity may support agriculture, trade and industrial activity across the region.

What’s Next?

The appointment of a survey agency will be followed by the preparation of detailed project reports. Construction timelines, project costs and implementation schedules will be finalised after the survey findings are submitted and approved.
