Patna: Doctors at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) successfully removed a whistle lodged in the airway of a 12-year-old boy through bronchoscopy, averting a potentially serious medical emergency.
The boy had accidentally swallowed the whistle while blowing it. The object travelled down the airway and became lodged in the bronchus. His family rushed him to PMCH, where examinations confirmed the presence of the foreign object and doctors decided to perform an immediate bronchoscopy.
Joint team conducts emergency procedure
The bronchoscopy was carried out at ENT Operation Theatre No. 2 at PMCH. The procedure was led by Dr Saima Ejaz, senior physician in the Pulmonary Department, with specialists from the ENT and Anaesthesia departments assisting the team.
Doctors carefully extracted the whistle from the airway while continuously monitoring the boy’s condition throughout the procedure.
Junior Residents Dr Aditya and Dr Roshan assisted the Pulmonary Department team. The procedure was conducted under the guidance of Pulmonary Department HOD Prof BK Chaudhary and senior faculty member Dr Samarendra Jha.
The ENT team, led by department HOD Prof Preeti Sharma, also assisted during the bronchoscopy. The Anaesthesia team played a key role in maintaining the boy’s safety during the procedure under the guidance of Prof Sudama.
Timely intervention prevents complications
PMCH Superintendent Dr Rajiv said the whistle had become lodged in the bronchus and was safely removed following timely medical intervention.
The PMCH administration commended the coordinated efforts of the Pulmonary, ENT and Anaesthesia departments in successfully treating the child.
