Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Monday spoke with Lovely Professional University (LPU) founder and Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal over the safety of students from Bihar following violent protests at the university’s Phagwara campus in Punjab.
CM Samrat sought necessary measures to ensure the safety and protect the interests of students from Bihar. He later said that Mittal had assured him of full cooperation and necessary steps in this regard.
Violence Follows Student Protest
The LPU campus witnessed violent unrest on Sunday after students protested over unverified allegations concerning the alleged sexual assault of a female student.
The university has denied the allegation and described the claims as rumours, while Punjab Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the unrest.
The protests escalated into vandalism and a blockade of National Highway 44. Police subsequently increased security at the university, with the situation brought under control.
Classes Suspended For 10 Days
Following the violence, LPU suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28. Mid-term examinations have also been postponed until further notice.
The university has permitted students to return home after consulting their parents. Students who remain on campus have been advised to stay in their hostels or other accommodation and avoid unnecessary movement.
The university has also appealed to students not to participate in any form of unrest or protest activity.

Bihar Students’ Safety In Focus

Choudhary’s intervention came specifically in response to concerns regarding the safety and interests of students from Bihar. Mittal assured the Chief Minister that the university would extend full cooperation and take necessary measures to safeguard them.
Police Presence Increased
Security arrangements have been strengthened across the LPU campus, with police personnel deployed around academic and hostel blocks. Investigators are examining the allegations and the circumstances that led to the violence.
The university has said that the safety and well-being of students remain the priority as authorities work to restore normalcy on campus.
