Bihar Plans Satellite-Based Mineral Hunt Across 38 Districts, Targets Critical Minerals

The proposed exploration drive will cover more than 7,000 locations, focusing on critical minerals, rare earth elements and base metals, with projected revenue and employment benefits dependent on exploration findings.

Patna: Bihar is planning a statewide mineral exploration drive covering more than 7,000 locations across all 38 districts, using satellite imagery, geological surveys, geochemical analysis and geophysical studies to identify deposits of valuable minerals, according to details provided by the state government.

The proposed initiative, being planned in coordination with the Geological Survey of India (GSI), will focus on critical minerals, rare earth elements and base metals. The exploration process will follow a phased system, beginning with preliminary surveys and progressing to detailed investigation before commercial mining is considered.

The plan is expected to help identify mineral-rich areas, create three-dimensional maps of deposits and guide excavation based on scientific assessments. However, the projected financial and employment benefits will depend on the findings, subsequent approvals and the commercial viability of the deposits.

According to estimates cited in the plan, the initiative could generate annual revenue of Rs 21,000 crore, provide direct employment to 18,000 people and create indirect employment opportunities for around four lakh people. The basis and timeline for these projections were not specified in the information available.

Bihar’s Mines and Geology Minister Dr Pramod Kumar said the G-4 exploration system would help identify mineral deposits before excavation, potentially reducing costs and improving the efficiency of mining operations.

Four-stage process for mineral exploration

The proposed exploration programme will follow the G-4 to G-1 framework, under which the level of investigation becomes progressively more detailed.

  • G-4 – Reconnaissance survey: Preliminary studies will identify areas with potential mineral deposits, particularly critical minerals and rare earth elements.
  • G-3 – Prospecting: Initial drilling, trenching and other investigations will help estimate the general extent and distribution of ore deposits.
  • G-2 – General exploration: Further investigations will improve understanding of the size, shape and quality of mineral deposits.
  • G-1 – Detailed exploration: More intensive studies will establish the geological characteristics and estimated resources of deposits to support decisions on commercial development.

The use of satellite data alongside geological, geochemical and geophysical investigations is intended to narrow down promising locations before more expensive field investigations and drilling are undertaken.

Identification of a potential deposit, however, does not automatically mean that it can be mined commercially. Further assessment of mineral concentration, extraction costs, infrastructure requirements and environmental implications will be necessary.

Mineral deposits identified in different districts

The information provided for the proposed initiative identifies several districts as potential sources of valuable minerals.

Rohtas district reportedly has approximately 13 crore tonnes of glauconite, with an estimated value of Rs 14,000 crore. Jamui has reported iron ore deposits estimated at Rs 5,000 crore.

Lithium has been reported in Nawada, while vanadium occurrences have been identified in Gaya and Jehanabad. Banka and Munger have deposits of feldspar and silica sand.

The state is also reported to have 17 rare earth elements, eight base metals and five critical minerals represented among its mineral resources. The specific deposits, their quantities and their economic viability would need to be established through systematic exploration.

Why critical minerals matter

Critical minerals are important for industries ranging from renewable energy and electronics to transportation and defence. Lithium, cobalt and nickel are used in battery technologies, while vanadium has applications in specialised alloys and certain energy-storage systems.

Rare earth elements are used in high-performance magnets, wind turbines, electronic equipment and several defence applications. Some critical minerals are also essential to semiconductor manufacturing and advanced industrial technologies.

For Bihar, identifying economically viable deposits could create opportunities for mining, mineral processing and associated industries. However, the benefits would depend on the quality and quantity of the deposits, the availability of infrastructure and the ability to extract them sustainably.

Commercial mining will depend on further assessment

The proposed exploration drive is expected to generate geological data and three-dimensional maps to help authorities determine where detailed investigations and, eventually, mining may be feasible.

The reported gold reserves in Jamui have previously attracted attention, but the economic feasibility of extraction depends on factors such as ore concentration, recovery costs and environmental risks.

Similarly, the presence of lithium or other critical minerals does not by itself establish the viability of a mining project. Detailed exploration, resource estimation, regulatory approvals and environmental clearances would be required before commercial production could begin.

The state government’s proposed programme is intended to build a clearer picture of Bihar’s mineral resources and identify deposits that could support future industrial development and employment.

The projected revenue and job figures should be treated as estimates until the exploration results, implementation schedule and commercial mining plans are established.
