Muzaffarpur/Patna: An eight-year-old girl admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) has been diagnosed with acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), hospital officials said on Saturday.
The child, identified as Kanak Kumari from Sugauli in East Champaran district, was admitted to SKMCH on May 3 after showing symptoms associated with AES, locally referred to as “chamki bukhar”.
According to a report issued by SKMCH, tests confirmed AES linked to Japanese encephalitis (JE). The girl remains under treatment in the PICU.
AES Cases In Bihar
Hospital authorities said 17 AES cases have been recorded so far this season. A total of 29 children have recovered from the illness and have been discharged from the hospital.
Officials also shared district-wise figures of confirmed AES cases. These include one case each from West Champaran, Gopalganj and Saran, two from Sitamarhi, five from Sheohar, and three from East Champaran.
Monitoring And Treatment
SKMCH is one of Bihar’s main centres for AES treatment and receives patients from several districts during the outbreak season, which typically coincides with the summer months.
Health officials have not released further details about the condition of the child or any additional preventive measures taken in the affected districts.
