Patna: The traffic management system in four smart cities in Patna, Bihar Sharif, Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur is set to become technology-driven with the introduction of adaptive AI cameras capable of issuing automatic e-challans and adjusting traffic signal timings in real time.
The proposal, submitted by the Police Headquarters to the Transport Department, follows completed surveys in the cities. Officials say installation will begin once approval is granted and is expected to ease congestion.
AI-based traffic systems are already operational in several Indian cities, including Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Noida, Delhi, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad and Gurugram, where authorities report improved traffic flow and enforcement. Bihar officials say they studied these models before designing the local rollout.
In Patna, 28 AI cameras will be installed at major intersections. The cameras will monitor traffic density and adjust signal timings dynamically — extending green lights in congested areas and shortening them where vehicle movement is lighter. Authorities claim this will reduce unnecessary stoppages and improve mobility.
Unlike traditional CCTV systems, the AI cameras will also issue instant e-challans for violations. They are expected to detect 14 categories of offences, including not wearing helmets or seat belts, mobile phone use while driving, wrong-side movement and triple riding.
Officials believe the technology could reduce road accidents by up to 25% and increase fine collection by around 50%. Busy junctions such as Dakbungalow Square, Income Tax Roundabout, Gandhi Maidan, High Court Turn, Kurji Turn, Digha-Ashiana and JP Roundabout are expected to benefit most from the intervention.
