Patna: The Department of Nephrology at AIIMS Patna observed World Kidney Day 2026 with an awareness programme aimed at promoting kidney health and encouraging preventive healthcare practices. The event brought together doctors, academicians and healthcare professionals to discuss the growing burden of kidney diseases and the importance of early detection.
Addressing the gathering, Prof (Dr) Amresh Krishna, head of the Department of Nephrology at AIIMS Patna, highlighted the increasing prevalence of kidney-related disorders. He emphasised that early diagnosis and timely medical intervention are essential in preventing serious complications. According to him, regular health check-ups, adequate hydration, a balanced diet and maintaining an active lifestyle play a significant role in protecting kidney function.
The chief guest, Prof (Dr) Hemant Kumar, president of AIIMS Gorakhpur and a Padma Shri awardee, delivered a lecture focusing on preventive strategies for kidney health. He encouraged people to adopt healthier eating habits and reduce the consumption of junk food. Kumar also stressed the need to control hypertension, noting that uncontrolled blood pressure remains one of the leading causes of kidney damage.
Prof (Dr) Prit Pal Singh from the Department of Nephrology at IGIMS Patna spoke about the importance of organ donation in saving lives. He urged citizens to support kidney donation initiatives, explaining that organ donation can significantly improve the survival chances of patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease.
Several senior doctors and faculty members attended the event, including Prof (Dr) Sanjay Pandey, dean (research), Prof (Dr) Manoj Kumar, dean (examination), Prof (Dr) Ruchi Sinha, dean (student affairs), Prof (Dr) Anup Kumar, medical superintendent, Prof (Dr) Jyoti Prakash, head of general medicine, and Dr Kamlesh Gunjan, head of urology at AIIMS Patna. Experts from other institutions, including IGIMS Patna and Patna Medical College and Hospital, also participated in discussions on kidney health and prevention.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Megha Saigal, assistant professor in the Department of Nephrology at AIIMS Patna. She thanked the speakers and participants for their contributions, noting that community awareness, preventive healthcare and organ donation are crucial in tackling the growing challenge of kidney diseases.
