Darbhanga: There is good news for air travellers in Bihar as Akasa Air has received permission to start direct flights between Darbhanga and Bengaluru from February. With this addition, Darbhanga airport will operate a total of 34 flights under the winter schedule. The move is expected to improve connectivity for passengers and strengthen the airport’s role as a key travel hub for the Mithila region.
As part of the revised schedule, Akasa Air has been allotted three new slots for Bengaluru, Delhi and Mumbai. Other airlines have also been given additional slots to expand their services. Air India Express has received two new slots for the Bengaluru–Delhi sector, SpiceJet has been given one new slot for Ahmedabad, and IndiGo has made its Mumbai service a daily operation. These changes aim to meet the growing demand for air travel from Darbhanga.
The direct flight to Bengaluru is particularly important for people working in the IT sector, students and business travellers. For several months, passengers were forced to travel via Patna after earlier services became irregular or were suspended, leading to higher costs and longer journeys. The launch of Akasa Air’s direct service is expected to bring much-needed relief and convenience.
At present, Darbhanga airport offers direct flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad, with passenger numbers increasing steadily. Authorities are also working to extend the airport’s operating hours from 11 to 12 hours, and night landing facilities are expected to become operational from February. These steps are likely to attract more airlines, increase flight frequency and support economic and employment opportunities in the region.
