Patna/Muzaffarpur: Three members of a single family were killed by electrocution on Friday morning after a live electricity wire snapped and fell outside their home in a village in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, police said.
The incident occurred in Mankauli village under the jurisdiction of the Fakuli police station. The victims were identified as Sonu Rai, a local PACS chairman, his son Mithu Kumar, and his nephew Vicky Kumar.
According to preliminary accounts, Rai was standing outside his house barefoot when the electricity cable supplying power to the home suddenly broke and fell to the ground. The exposed wire discharged a strong electric current, fatally electrocuting him on the spot. Hearing the commotion, Mithu Kumar and Vicky Kumar rushed forward in an attempt to save him, but were also electrocuted as they came into contact with the live wire. All three men died at the scene before neighbours could intervene.
Police officers from the Fakuli station arrived shortly after receiving information about the incident and sent the bodies for postmortem examination. Senior police officer Animesh Chandra Gyani, deputy superintendent of police (West-2), visited the site and confirmed that the deaths were caused by electrocution due to a fallen power line.
An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the snapped wire. Officials said compensation would be provided to the victims’ families in accordance with government norms.
The tragedy has left the village in mourning, with residents expressing anger and grief over what they described as poor maintenance of the electricity infrastructure. Family members of the deceased were inconsolable, while villagers said the incident could have been prevented had the power line been repaired or replaced in time.
