Purnea: The central government has taken an important decision to upgrade the Khagaria–Purnea road in Bihar into a four-lane highway. The announcement was made in the Lok Sabha by the Union minister for road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari. He said the 143km-long road would be widened at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore, a move expected to improve connectivity between Patna and the Seemanchal region and reduce long-standing travel problems.
At present, the road from Khagaria to Purnea is only two lanes wide, despite heavy traffic from buses, cars and goods vehicles. Commuters travelling via Begusarai and Khagaria often face traffic jams and delays. The issue was raised in parliament by MP Rajesh Verma, who asked the government when the road would be upgraded to meet growing traffic needs.
Responding to the question, Gadkari said the ministry of road transport and highways had approved the project and that the entire stretch would be converted into a four-lane highway. He explained that the upgrade would improve road safety and cut travel time for passengers and transporters. The project is also expected to support trade and economic activity in the region.
The minister added that final cabinet approval is likely within the next 10 to 15 days. After that, tenders will be awarded and construction work will begin within one and a half months. Once completed, the four-lane highway is expected to bring lasting relief to commuters and strengthen Bihar’s road infrastructure.
