Patna: The long-pending doubling of the Ara–Sasaram railway line has finally gathered momentum, offering significant relief to residents of Bihar’s Bhojpur and Rohtas districts. Officials have begun land acquisition and survey work, a key step toward replacing the existing single track with a double line that could dramatically improve rail connectivity in the region.
For years, the single-track route has been a bottleneck, with passenger and freight trains sharing the same line and frequently delayed while waiting for crossings. These disruptions have had a knock-on effect on local businesses, farmers and traders, who often struggled to move goods to markets on time. Rising transport costs and unreliable delivery schedules have added pressure to an already fragile rural economy.
Local residents say the project could be a turning point. Traders and small shopkeepers describe the development as a crucial step toward improving trade and mobility, while farmers hope faster and more reliable freight services will help them reach buyers more efficiently. The project is also expected to reduce travel time for commuters and make daily journeys safer and more predictable.
Once completed, the double-track system will allow separate lines for passenger and freight trains, increasing speed and capacity while reducing delays. Experts believe the upgrade could attract new investment to the region, stimulate local industries and create employment opportunities linked to construction, logistics and trade, reinforcing the role of railways as a driver of regional development in eastern India.
