Patna: The ambitious Bakhtiyarpur–Tajpur bridge project, a key piece of Bihar’s road infrastructure push, is scheduled for completion by May 2026, with officials confirming that around 65% of the work has already been completed.
During a review, the secretary of the Road Construction Department Pankaj Kumar Pal issued firm directions to resolve all bottlenecks without delay and accelerate construction. Particular emphasis was placed on addressing pending issues related to road over bridges (ROBs), with instructions to work closely with the railways to ensure timely progress.
The bridge is expected to play a crucial role in improving connectivity between north and south Bihar. Once operational, it will directly link NH-31 near Karjan in Patna district with NH-122 at Tajpur in Samastipur, creating an additional corridor between the two regions.

Construction is advancing steadily on multiple fronts. Work on approach roads, ROBs and associated structures from Karjan to the Ganga bridge is underway, while about 16 km of approach road from Tajpur to Chaklalshahi has already been completed. Officials have also asked the executing agency to quicken the pace of bridge construction to meet the revised timeline.
The four-lane project is being implemented by the Bihar State Road Development Corporation at a cost of Rs 2,875.02 crore. The total length of the corridor is 51.26 km, including a 5.51 km bridge across the Ganga and 45.75 km of approach roads.
Once completed, the Bakhtiyarpur–Tajpur bridge is expected to significantly reduce traffic pressure on the Mahatma Gandhi Setu and Rajendra Setu, offering an alternative route for vehicles travelling between Samastipur, Muzaffarpur, Begusarai and Patna. For commuters and freight traffic alike, officials say, the project could mark a decisive shift in how the region moves across the Ganga.
