Patna: With just three days left for the Bihar Assembly elections, the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) has started a major drive to stop fake and misleading posts on social media. The department has identified 184 online posts and accounts spreading objectionable or communal content and has begun taking action against them. Officials said that these posts were trying to disturb peace and influence voters during the election period.
According to EOU DIG Manavjit Singh Dhillon, 21 FIRs have already been filed against 67 links and 25 social media handles that shared hateful or misleading material. The EOU has also found four YouTube channels that were posting songs and videos meant to spread fear among people on caste and religious lines. Action is being taken under Section 69 of the IT Act to block these channels. Dhillon said the department is working to remove such content quickly to ensure fair and peaceful elections.
Officials also confirmed that 17 links containing AI-generated fake videos have been successfully blocked. These videos were made to look real but were completely false, aiming to mislead voters. Two YouTube channels have been found to post fake news repeatedly, and a proposal has been sent to the central ministry to block them permanently.
In addition, the EOU has found 40 online platforms, 28 YouTube and digital news sites, and 70 social media profiles that have been spreading objectionable or false posts again and again. The department said that FIRs will be filed against all of them and action will be taken to block their accounts. Officials added that strict monitoring of social media will continue throughout the election period to stop the spread of fake news and maintain law and order in Bihar.
