Bhagalpur: A new chapter in Bihar’s rail network began on July 18, when the Prime Minister inaugurated the Malda Town–Lucknow (Gomtinagar) Amrit Bharat Express, a service designed to enhance regional connectivity across the state. The train, which officially enters regular service on July 24, stops at 22 stations, linking cities and smaller towns including Bhagalpur, Kahalgaon, Jamalpur, Kiul, Gaya, and Sasaram.
Officials said the train will serve millions of daily commuters, students, labourers and traders, providing faster and more comfortable travel options across both major and semi-urban centres. Built under India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, the service includes modern coaches in general and sleeper classes, equipped with air-spring suspension, mobile charging ports, reflective floor strips, clean toilets with accessibility features, and advanced safety systems such as fire detection and a talk-back unit. The train can reach speeds of up to 130 kmph.
“The railway is more than transport; it is a lifeline for education, employment, healthcare and social mobility,” a spokesperson for Indian Railways said. “With the Amrit Bharat Express, we are offering a safe, affordable and dignified travel option for all, particularly for rural and middle-class passengers.”
Analysts note that the new service marks a shift in Indian Railways’ approach, focusing on inclusive development by extending modern amenities to smaller towns rather than concentrating solely on major cities. For Bihar, this represents a significant step towards balanced regional growth and improved accessibility for millions.
