Patna: Undergraduate classes will begin in 211 newly established government degree colleges across Bihar from July 15, marking a significant expansion of the state’s higher education network.
According to the Higher Education Department, preparations for the launch of the first academic session have been completed. Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary is expected to inaugurate the session, with the main event proposed to be held in Bhagalpur.
A proposal for the inauguration has been sent to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat.
Universities Complete Faculty Deployment
The universities concerned have completed the process of deputing principals and teachers to the new colleges.
Faculty members have been deputed to teach six undergraduate subjects during the inaugural 2026–30 academic session, while principals have also been appointed on a deputation basis until regular appointments are made.
Six Subjects To Be Offered Initially
The first batch of students will be offered undergraduate courses in six Arts subjects:
- English
- Hindi
- History
- Political Science
- Economics
- Sociology
Since none of these subjects require laboratory work, the government has decided to begin academic activities before permanent infrastructure is completed.
Classes To Be Held In Existing Educational Institutions
Until dedicated campuses are constructed, the new colleges will function from existing Plus-2 schools and Buniyadi Vidyalayas across the state.
One college will temporarily operate from a teacher training college building.
Officials said the required academic resources have already been provided to all institutions.
Rs 50 Lakh Allocated To Each College
The state government has allocated Rs 50 lakh to each of the 211 colleges to support the commencement of academic activities.
In the long term, each institution is expected to offer 16 undergraduate subjects across the Arts, Science and Commerce streams.
Under the approved staffing pattern, 15 subjects will have two teachers each, while the 16th vocational subject will have one teacher.
Forty-Four Posts Created Per College
The government has created 44 sanctioned posts for every new degree college.
These include:
- One principal
- Thirty-two assistant professors
- Twelve teaching and non-teaching staff members
According to the Higher Education Department, the expansion is aimed at improving access to undergraduate education and strengthening higher education infrastructure across Bihar.
