Patna: Patna’s municipal authorities have unveiled plans to construct 31 modern vending zones across the city in an effort to tackle chronic traffic congestion and the proliferation of informal roadside shops. The proposal, prepared by the Patna Municipal Corporation, is set to be presented at the next corporation board meeting.
The new structures will be modelled on the existing Kadmkuan vending zone but built using reinforced cement concrete (RCC) rather than steel. This approach is expected to reduce costs and ensure greater durability, with an estimated lifespan of 70 to 80 years. The overall project is projected to cost over Rs 200 crore.
Most vending zones will feature two floors, while some sites may accommodate three-storey buildings. Each zone will provide designated spaces for vendors, safer structures, and improved facilities for customers.
The city has been divided into six administrative zones for the project. Patliputra will see the highest number of vending zones, with ten planned sites, followed by eight in the New Capital zone and four in Bankipur. Kankarbagh, Azimabad, and Patna City will each host three new zones. Locations in Bankipur, including Khetan Market, Musallahpur Haat, and McDowell Golambar, have already been identified, while other sites were chosen following detailed assessments of local neighbourhood needs and traffic patterns.
Municipal Commissioner Yashpal Meena is personally overseeing the project, instructing departments to fast-track no-objection certificates and ensure that each site is equipped with essential amenities such as water, electricity, toilets, and sanitation facilities.
Construction is expected to commence within four months of receiving all necessary approvals, with full operation of the vending zones anticipated by the end of 2027. Officials hope the initiative will not only relieve Patna’s traffic woes but also create a more organised, modernised market environment for residents and visitors alike.
