Patna : Bihar’s transport department has unveiled plans to introduce 340 new air-conditioned passenger buses across the state, in a move aimed at making travel easier, faster and safer for residents.
According to officials, the fleet will consist entirely of electric or CNG-powered buses, signalling a shift towards more environmentally sustainable public transport. The scheme is expected to be rolled out from June under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
The buses will be introduced in phases, beginning with key urban centres including Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Rajgir and Nalanda. Authorities said the allocation of buses across districts would be determined based on population size and geographic spread to maximise coverage.
Patna is set to receive the largest share in the initial rollout, with 31 buses planned for the state capital. Officials said this reflects both the city’s population density and the high demand for public transport.
The initiative also seeks to address existing challenges in the state’s bus network. Services currently operated by the Patna Municipal Corporation have struggled with overcrowding, prompting plans for upgrades to improve passenger comfort and efficiency.
In a push for inclusivity, designated seats will be reserved for disabled passengers, elderly people and women once the new services begin operation.
The scheme will also introduce digital and commuter-friendly features, including online ticket booking and the option of monthly passes for urban travellers. Bus routes will be clearly numbered, with displays installed at stops to help passengers identify services and reduce confusion.
Officials said the improvements are designed to encourage greater use of public transport while ensuring a more reliable and accessible travel experience across Bihar.
