Patna: Proceedings in the Bihar Assembly turned confrontational as opposition lawmakers demanded an immediate discussion on the rising number of crimes against women, leading to a walkout and heightened political tensions.
As the House convened, MLAs from opposition parties disrupted proceedings, pressing for urgent debate on women’s safety. The Speaker, citing procedural rules, suggested the issue could be addressed during Zero Hour. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Chaudhary responded, assuring that the government was prepared to answer all questions regarding crime and safety.
Following the assurance, opposition legislators temporarily resumed their seats, but the calm was short-lived. The opposition soon staged a walkout, accusing the government of avoiding critical issues and showing insensitivity toward crimes against women.
RJD MLA Bhai Virendra highlighted past incidents, including the NEET student case and the Darbhanga rape-murder, alleging that the government had downplayed these events instead of taking serious action. He said the perceived inaction sent a “wrong message” to society and emboldened criminals.
Left-party MLA Sandeep Saurabh added that promises made during elections about women’s safety were not being translated into effective measures, reflecting a growing indifference toward the issue both inside and outside the Assembly.
The confrontation underscores mounting political pressure on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s government to take stronger measures to protect women in the state.
