Patna: A statewide shutdown called by student organisations on Saturday over the alleged NEET paper leak, demands for accountability, and recent police action against student protesters disrupted normal life across Bihar. Demonstrations were reported from several districts, while a confrontation between protesters and police at Patna’s Dak Bungalow Crossing led to a lathi-charge, injuries, and detentions.
Near Ramgulam Chowk, some protesters climbed a mobile tower as part of the demonstration. RJD leader Tej Pratap Yadav reached the spot in support of the protesters and waved the Tricolour before he was later taken into police custody.
Student groups, including the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the Inqalabi Naujawan Sabha (INOUS), organised the bandh and urged supporters to block roads and stage protests against the Centre and the Bihar government.
Clashes at Dak Bungalow Crossing
A large number of students and youth protesters gathered at Dak Bungalow Crossing in Patna during the morning, raising slogans and blocking traffic.
According to officials, police initially attempted to persuade the protesters to clear the road. As the situation escalated, a scuffle broke out between security personnel and demonstrators. Police used force to disperse the crowd after stone-pelting was reported during the protest.
Several students were reportedly injured in the lathi-charge, while others were detained by the police. Traffic movement at the busy intersection remained affected for a considerable period.
Protests Spread Across Bihar
The bandh affected several districts beyond the state capital, with student activists organising demonstrations and road blockades at multiple locations.
The protests caused traffic disruptions in several areas, affecting commuters and travellers during the morning hours. Protesters alleged that the alleged NEET paper leak had undermined confidence in the examination system and created uncertainty for lakhs of aspirants.
Student Organisations Press Demands
Student organisations have demanded an impartial investigation into the alleged NEET paper leak, the arrest of those responsible, and the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
Protest leaders also criticised the police action against students in Patna, alleging that the use of force violated the democratic right to protest. They said the Bihar Bandh was called to press these demands and seek greater accountability.
Administration on High Alert
The Patna district administration had deployed additional police personnel at major intersections, markets, and other sensitive locations in anticipation of the bandh.
Officials appealed to the public to maintain peace and said law enforcement agencies were taking necessary steps to preserve public order. They warned that action would be taken against anyone involved in violence or vandalism.
Protest Likely to Continue
Student organisations said their agitation would continue until concrete action is taken in connection with the alleged NEET paper leak and their demands are addressed.
Police and administrative officials continued to monitor the situation across Patna and other districts throughout the day as security remained heightened amid the ongoing protests.
