Patna: Residents of Bihar will soon be able to book bike taxis with a single call, as the state prepares to expand the service to every district by mid-September.
Modelled on cab-hailing platforms such as Uber and Ola, the bike taxi initiative is expected to deploy around 2,000 vehicles in each district. The transport department is in talks with private companies, and an agreement is likely to be signed by the second week of September.
Under the plan, permits for roughly 76,000 bikes will be issued initially, with officials estimating that more than 400,000 people could benefit from the service daily.
Currently, bike taxis operate in Patna and Muzaffarpur. Once expanded, passengers within a 10-15km radius of city centres will be able to book rides, with the service gradually extending to block levels. Alongside passenger travel, the vehicles will also support delivery services, including food platforms such as Swiggy and Zomato.
Authorities said the rollout would reduce dependence on autos and buses, providing faster and more flexible transport. The initiative is also expected to generate employment for young people across Bihar.
