Jehanabad: A female schoolteacher was allegedly assaulted by members of the BJP’s Mahila Morcha during a statewide bandh in Bihar on Thursday, raising questions over the nature of the protest, which was called in the name of protecting women’s dignity.
The bandh, organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s women’s wing from 7am to noon, was staged to protest against what the party described as objectionable remarks directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother, Hiraben Modi.
According to police and local reports, the incident occurred in Jehanabad district near Arwal turn, where hundreds of Mahila Morcha workers were blocking roads and shutting down shops. The teacher, who identified herself as independent of any political party, began taking photos and videos of the protest on her phone.
Angered by her actions, a group of BJP workers allegedly surrounded her and physically attacked her. Police intervened and escorted the injured woman to safety, later taking her to a police station.
Mahila Morcha members claimed the woman was a supporter of the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and accused her of working against the bandh. The teacher, however, denied any political affiliation, insisting she was simply a teacher documenting the events.
