Patna/Mumbai: The Bihar government has cleared plans for a new Bihar Bhawan in Mumbai, aimed at providing accommodation and modern facilities for people from the state visiting the city, particularly patients and their families.
The proposed building will rise in Elphinstone Estate, within the Mumbai Port Trust area, as a multi-storey structure comprising a ground floor, mezzanine, and 30 upper floors, along with three basement levels. The Cabinet approved the Rs 314.20 crore project on Tuesday, allowing construction to proceed rapidly.
Kumar Ravi, Secretary of Bihar’s Building Construction Department, described the initiative as a “significant step towards the progress and welfare of Bihar.” He said the Bhawan will offer dormitories and specialised arrangements for patients suffering from serious illnesses, including cancer, and their families, as well as accommodation for government officials and facilities for meetings.
The building will be constructed on a 2,753 square metre (0.68-acre) plot and is expected to reach 69 metres in height. Key features include 178 rooms and a 240-bed dormitory for patients and relatives, a conference hall for 72 people, a cafeteria, a medical room, and modern offices. Parking will be provided via a smart, sensor-based triple and double-decker facility accommodating 233 vehicles.
The project also emphasises sustainability, with plans for a sewage treatment plant, solar panel installation, and green area development. Ravi noted that the boundary wall has already been completed, a consultant selected, and the tendering process will conclude soon.
“The Bihar Bhawan in Mumbai will provide safe and affordable accommodation for the common people of Bihar while also strengthening the state’s presence in the financial capital,” Ravi said. He added that the building would also support efforts to promote industry in Bihar.
Construction is expected to follow strict timelines, with high-quality standards and transparency throughout the process.
