Patna: Consumers in Bihar will no longer need to stand in long queues at gas agencies to obtain a 5kg ‘Chhotu’ LPG cylinder, after oil companies introduced online booking services aimed at simplifying access for domestic users.
The move comes amid a steady rise in demand for the smaller LPG cylinders, which are widely used by small families, students, tenants, labourers and people living in temporary accommodation. Officials said consumers can now book the cylinders through mobile apps, company websites, WhatsApp services and IVRS call centres without visiting an agency in person.
Industry experts say the lightweight cylinders have become increasingly popular because they are easier to transport, store and handle in compact living spaces. The new digital booking system is expected to reduce waiting times and improve transparency in the delivery process.
Under the updated system, consumers must log in to their gas provider’s mobile application, verify their identity through a one-time password sent to their registered mobile number, and select either the “5kg Cylinder” or “Chhotu Cylinder” option. Payments can be made online or through cash on delivery, while booking and delivery details are sent directly to the customer’s phone.
Gas agencies said the expansion of digital services is part of a broader push to modernise LPG distribution and make services more accessible. Officials added that home delivery infrastructure for ‘Chhotu’ cylinders is also expected to be strengthened in the coming months.
Consumers can currently access the booking service through WhatsApp chat support, IVRS calling facilities, authorised gas agencies and company websites.
The initiative is expected to particularly benefit households seeking an affordable cooking fuel option, while also offering instant booking and tracking facilities without the inconvenience of repeated visits to distribution centres.
