Patna: The Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) has reported that its fleet of compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric buses has saved around 25 lakh liters of diesel, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 6,778 tonnes. Pollution from transportation in the state has reportedly fallen by roughly 30 percent.
BSRTC currently operates 884 buses, including 366 CNG vehicles and 25 electric buses. Under the central government’s PM e-Bus Seva Yojana, the state is expected to receive approximately 400 new electric buses, which will further reduce reliance on diesel and conventional fuels while promoting cleaner, quieter, and more environmentally friendly urban transport.
In addition, BSRTC is transforming its infrastructure. At least 30 percent of the area across its 17 bus depots and stands is being developed into green spaces, including tree plantations, green belts, solar-powered lighting, and eco-friendly building designs. Charging infrastructure for electric buses is also being rolled out in phases to support safe and modern public transportation.
Officials say these initiatives aim to strengthen environmental protection, reduce air and noise pollution, and provide passengers with sustainable, modern travel options.
