Patna: Dhanteras, the festival that marks the beginning of Diwali, arrived on Saturday with markets across Bihar bustling with excitement. Known as a day of wealth, prosperity, and happiness, it is traditionally celebrated by worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. This year, optimism is high as expectations of a good paddy harvest and increased spending power have brought shopkeepers hope for a record-breaking festival. Markets in district headquarters, towns, and rural areas are brimming with shoppers, and traders expect the total business to cross 100 crores this festive season.
The jewellery and bullion markets are seeing the highest enthusiasm. Many people are buying gold, silver coins, and idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh as part of the tradition. Diamond jewellery has also become very popular, with several customers booking items in advance to avoid crowds. Shopkeepers in Sabzi Bazaar and other areas reported heavy pre-bookings and strong customer interest. The trend shows that people are not only following age-old customs but also embracing modern shopping preferences alongside traditional practices.
Utensil and household markets are equally vibrant. Brass, bronze, steel, and aluminium utensils, decorative lamps, puja plates, and other items are being sold in large numbers. People believe that buying utensils on Dhanteras brings luck and prosperity. In the automobile market, both bikes and tractors are attracting buyers. Youth are particularly interested in new bikes, while farmers are booking tractors to help with their farming needs. E-rickshaws and e-bikes are also in demand, especially those made locally, reflecting a growing preference for sustainable and home-grown products.
Electronics stores are bustling as homemakers look to upgrade their kitchens and homes. Items such as refrigerators, washing machines, LED TVs, OTGs, chimneys, and air fryers are among the most sought-after. Mobile phones continue to be popular as well. Traders estimate that golden goods could generate 50 crores, utensils 15 crores, automobiles 20 crores, electronics 10 crores, and other items around 5 crores. With such a strong response from shoppers, Bihar’s Dhanteras markets show not only the festive spirit but also a surge in local economic activity, bringing hope and excitement to businesses and consumers alike.
